On April 20th, Elon Musk stated that Tesla will offer its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software to Chinese users soon.
Musk responded to a post on the social media platform X about the launch of FSD in China. He said that, “This may happen very soon”.
Tesla introduced FSD four years ago. Although Chinese customers continually ask for the FSD, it has not been launched yet in the country.
In November 2023, Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and Ministry of Transport issued a notice together. The notice announced that intelligent connected vehicles equipped with mass production conditions and autonomous driving capabilities could conduct on-road trials in designated areas after obtaining access permits. It also clarified the responsibility for accidents occurring when autonomous driving is engaged, which would be borne by the operating entity.
Subsequently, over 30 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou issued licenses for autonomous driving road tests. Automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, BAIC, and SAIC successively obtained relevant licenses in various regions.
The entry of FSD into Chinese market has been highly anticipated. Although there have been no official announcements, there have been many rumors suggesting that Tesla will launch FSD into Chinese market this year. Tesla officials have consistently stated that any relevant news will be announced through Tesla’s official website.
On April 20th, Tesla lowered the price of FSD in the United States from $12,000 to $8,000. Previously, Tesla also reduced the monthly subscription fee for FSD in the United States from $199 to $99.
Currently, Musk is betting on autonomous driving technology and he believes it will become Tesla’s main source of revenue.
