United States automaker General Motors said in a statement on April 26 that it would close its production operations in Colombia and Ecuador as part of its shift to producing next-generation vehicles.

GM said the Colmotores plant in Colombia will stop production today, and the Ecuador plant will also stop operations at the end of August this year.

In Colombia, the company is seeking approval from the Labor Ministry to lay off 850 workers. The company revealed that its Colombian production plant is operating at 9 percent capacity utilization, while its Ecuador plant is operating at 13 percent capacity utilization.

Colombia’s Labor ministry said in a statement that it would conduct a series of inspections of the plant as part of its duty to protect workers’ rights.

According to a report released in January, the closure of plants comes against the backdrop of a lowest sales since 14 years ago in 2023 fiscal year compared to 2022.

GM said that despite the closure of its production operations, it would not exit the market in either country and would retain dealerships in Colombia and Ecuador.
