According to foreign media reports, the US e-commerce giant Amazon now has more than 20,000 Rivian electric delivery vans (EDVs) delivering goods across the United States. This year, Amazon has used these vehicles to deliver more than 1 billion packages.

Amazon’s electric fleet was last updated in early August, when Amazon said Rivian had delivered 15,000 EDVs. At the end of November, the e-commerce giant said its Rivian commercial van fleet had expanded to more than 20,000 vehicles, but Rivian has more vans yet to be delivered.

In 2019, Amazon and Rivian reached an agreement to put 100,000 EDVs on the road by 2030. Rivian has already delivered its first EDVs to Amazon in the summer of 2022. That means it would take Rivian about two and a half years to produce 20,000 EDVs, or about 700 per month.

With the 2030 deadline now five years away, Rivian has a good chance of meeting its goals if it can maintain its current production rate. In a previous email to foreign media, Rivian said that the company is on schedule to meet its delivery commitments.

About 300 Rivian-made Amazon EDVs were sent to Germany, But the vast majority are in the United States: Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, New York Packages are delivered in cities such as York, Philadelphia, Portland, San Diego and Seattle.

To keep its huge fleet of electric vans running, Amazon has installed more than 17,000 charging stations in more than 120 distribution centers across the United States, making it the largest private charging network operator in the world.

Rivian makes electric Commercial vehicles designed specifically for Amazon, but last year Rivian said anyone could buy its electric commercial vehicles, now renamed Commercial Van or RCV, ending the exclusivity of its agreement with Amazon. AT&T has a pilot program testing several RCV and R1 electric vehicles, and Canada Post has commissioned custom delivery vans based on Rivian ECVs called Morgan Olson C250e.
