According to foreign media reports, South Korea’s Ministry of Transportation said on 14 March that Hyundai Motor and its sister company Kia Motors will recall about 170,000 electric vehicles in the country due to a software problem with the vehicles’ charging system.
South Korea’s Ministry of Transport revealed that Hyundai will recall 113,916 electric vehicles in South Korea. A total of 5 electric vehicles are affected by this recall, including models of the IONIQ series and its high-end brand Genesis. Kia will recall 56.016 electric vehicles.
South Korea’s Transportation Ministry said it had discovered a bug in the integrated charging control unit software used in 170,000 Hyundai and Kia electric vehicles, which could make it difficult for low-voltage batteries to supply power and could cause the vehicles to suddenly stop while driving.

Hyundai and Kia will release software updates for affected models. If the fault code still occurs, the company will replace the vehicle’s integrated charge control unit.
“Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors will act quickly to avoid inconvenience to customers and will continue to prioritize the safety of customers and their vehicles,” Hyundai Motor Group said in a statement. The recall will begin in March. Starting on the 18th.
Hyundai Motor Group said it has not yet formally estimated the global impact of the latest recall. Some South Korean media reported that about 600,000 electric vehicles worldwide may be affected by this defect.
