Car production in the UK fell 7 percent in April from a year earlier, the second month in a row, according to industry figures released on the 30th May, as carmakers halted production of some existing models and more factories switched to electric vehicles.
Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that 61,820 cars rolled off the production line in the UK in April, compared with 66,527 in the same month last year. In March, the country’s car production fell 27.1 percent compared with the same period last year.
The data shows that the proportion of electrified vehicles (including pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles) in the UK total production in April was 40.5%, up from 37.7% in the same month last year. The SMMT said carmakers produced a total of 25,031 electric vehicles in the UK in April, up 0.1 percent from a year earlier.

Production of electric vehicles is growing in the UK as giants such as Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover’s parent company Tata Motors invest billions of dollars in the country to beef up electric vehicle production as the country strives to achieve zero emissions by 2050.
Meanwhile, the SMMT also added that cumulative UK car production has fallen by 0.8% so far this year compared to the same period in 2023.
SMMT Chief executive Mike Hawes said: “In just a few weeks’ time, the UK will hold a general election. The next government must ensure that the conditions are created not only for the competitiveness of UK manufacturing, but also for the investment that the automotive industry needs to transition to a zero-emission future.”
