According to foreign media reports, Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD’s global sales surpassed Japanese car company Nissan in October. This is the first time that BYD has surpassed Japanese car companies in monthly sales.

BYD’s global sales rose 39 % year-on-year to 301,833 units in October. In comparison, Nissan’s global sales in October improved only 5 % year-on-year to 279,102 units.

Although China accounts for nearly 30 % of Nissan’s global sales, the company’s October sales in China were below year-ago levels. Nissan has launched the Ariya and Sylphy electric cars in China, but the company has fared poorly against local EV makers.

In contrast, the BYD Seagull, with its lower price, was the second best-selling EV model worldwide in October, behind the Tesla Model Y, according to market researcher MarkLines.

Currently BYD’s EVs have covered all price ranges, with the company releasing the U8 electric SUV under its luxury brand Rangoon in September. the Rangoon U8 was unveiled at the Mobility Show in Japan in October, and BYD is considering launching the Rangoon lineup in the Japanese market.

For BYD, cost competitiveness is one of its strongest weapons. The batteries, motors and other key components of BYD’s electric vehicles are produced in-house by the company, a move that not only reduces costs but also speeds up the development of new models.

BYD is currently embarking on a global expansion and is trying to gain a foothold in the Southeast Asian market, which has long been dominated by Japanese car brands. However, a representative of BYD’s Japanese subsidiary told the media, “Sales of the Dolphin small electric car are strong in Thailand and Brazil.”

In the Japanese market, local car companies hold 80% of the market share. In January, BYD began selling all-electric SUVs in Japan and plans to establish a sales network of 100 dealers in the country.
