According to foreign media reports, in the first four months of this year, the Czech car production exceeded a record half a million units, reaching a new milestone.

According to data released by the Czech Automobile Industry Association on May 21, the country’s three major automakers produced a total of 531,355 vehicles between January and April this year, an increase of 14 percent over the same period last year. In April alone, the country’s car production was up 24 percent from the same month last year. However, from the beginning of January to the end of April this year, Czech electric vehicle production fell 29 percent year-on-year to 39,600 units.

Skoda, the Czech Republic’s largest exporter, produced 330,175 cars in the country in the first four months of this year, up 11.2% from the same period last year. For comparison, Skoda’s 2023 production of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the Czech Republic is close to 865,000 units.

Hyundai was the second largest car brand by volume in the Czech Republic last year, producing 340,500 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in 2023. The next largest brands are Toyota, Peugeot and Citroen (all part of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech), with a combined production of 192,000 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in 2023.

The Czech economy grew faster than expected in the first quarter of this year as household spending recovered, as policy makers continued to cut borrowing costs. Preliminary figures show that Czech gross domestic product grew by 0.5% in the second quarter from the previous quarter, the fastest quarterly growth in two years.

Zdenek Petzl, head of the Czech Automotive Industry Association, said in a statement that the development of the country’s automotive industry confirms its strong competitive position, which is “good news for the domestic economy.” Still, the industry is keeping a close eye on ongoing risks in global supply chains.
