Europe's January Electric Car Sales Boosted 25% Year-On-Year

According to foreign media reports, in January 2024, European electric vehicle sales were boosted by about 25% year-on-year, and considering that incentives have been eliminated or reduced in many European countries, this achievement can be considered a very positive sign.

 

Relevant EV sales data show that 198,993 electric vehicles were registered in Europe in January, a 25% year-on-year improvement, with a market share of about 20%, compared to 17% a year earlier. Among them, sales of pure electric vehicles amounted to about 120,500 units, a 29% year-on-year improvement, with a market share of 12%, while sales of plug-in hybrids amounted to about 78,500 units, a 23% year-on-year improvement, with a market share of 8%.

  • Tesla Model Y: 11,425 units

 

  • Tesla Model 3: 6,479 units

 

  • Audi Q4 e-tron: 4,979 units

 

  • Skoda Enyaq iV: 4,816 units

 

  • Volvo XC40: 4,554 units (4,371 pure electric, 183 plug-in hybrid)

 

  • Volvo XC60 PHEVs: 4,075 units

 

  • MG MG 4: 3,544 units

 

  • Ford Impala (Kuga) PHEV: 3,496 units

 

  • BMW i4: 3,473 units

 

  • Dacia Spring: 3,409 units

 

There were some changes in the European EV brand sales charts in January, with BMW in first place with a 10.3 % share and Tesla in second place with a 9.1 % share, but the company only has a small lead over Mercedes-Benz, another German premium brand.

 

January’s EV market share rankings by brand in Europe:

 

  • BMW: 10.3 %

 

  • Tesla: 9.1 %

 

  • Mercedes-Benz: 9.0 %

 

  • Audi: 8.3 %

 

  • Volvo: 7.8 %

 

  • Volkswagen: 5%

 

  • Kia: 5%

 

  • Peugeot: 4.8 %

 

At the group level, Volkswagen Group is in first place thanks to a 20.5% share; Stellantis is in second place with a 12.0% market share.

 

  • Volkswagen Group: 20.5% (5% for the Volkswagen brand)

 

  • Stellantis: 12.0 %

 

  • BMW Group: 11.0% (10.3% for the BMW brand)

 

  • Geely-Volvo: 9.6 %

 

  • Mercedes-Benz Group: 9.5% (9.0% for Mercedes-Benz brand)

 

  • Tesla: 9.1 %

 

  • Hyundai Motor Group: 8.7 %
