Spain’s industry minister said Ford plans to build 300,000 new models a year at its Spanish plant starting in 2027.

“This will guarantee the workload and output of the plant and prepare it for the future,” the minister said in a statement on May 10.

Ford currently builds the Kuga compact SUV at its plant in Valencia, Spain, while production of other models, including the Galaxy and S-Max minivans and the Mondeo midsize sedan, has dwindled in recent years.

A Ford’s Spain spokesman said the company plans to start production of a new electrified model at the Valencia plant in 2027. The spokesman also said the model would be available in Europe and other markets.

Ford said in March that it was considering building a new “Multi-energy System” passenger model in Valencia, but gave no further details. The company’s Escape, produced in Valencia, is available in plug-in hybrid, full hybrid and internal combustion engine versions.

Ford is reconsidering its plan to sell only all-electric vehicles in Europe by 2030 after electric vehicle sales failed to meet expectations. The company has previously said it will produce the next generation of pure electric vehicles in Valencia using a new platform it developed in the United States.

Ford has said it may continue to sell internal combustion engines beyond 2030 if consumers demand them. “If we see strong demand, for example for plug-in hybrids, we will offer them,” Martin Sander, head of Ford’s passenger car business in Europe, said at the Future Car conference on May 7.
