According to foreign media reports, General Motors announced on March 1st that it will recall 820000 newer pickup trucks in North America due to the possibility of the vehicle’s tailgate accidentally loosening and opening.

The recall includes 2020 through 2024 model year trucks with power-unlocking liftgates, where the vehicle’s exterior tailgate switch can leak water and cause a short circuit during parking. Specific recalled models include 2020 through 2023 model year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, as well as 2020 through 2024 model year heavy-duty pickup trucks with power unlocking tailgates.

GM said it has received one minor injury complaint and three minor property damage complaints related to the recall issue.

About 570,000 trucks in the recall are from the U.S. and another 250,000 are from Canada. The recall is GM’s largest in the U.S. this year and one of the largest so far in 2024.

Regulators in the U.S. and Canada say unsecured cargo could fall out of the truck bed onto the road if the tailgate opens while traveling.

GM said the company is working to quickly fix the problem. The company launched an investigation last November after receiving complaints about tailgates opening unexpectedly, and said it had received 136 complaints about tailgates opening unexpectedly.

GM dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assembly, but the part may be disabled for vehicles and owners in dealer inventory until the replacement part arrives. GM says the replacement part uses a new material that improves water resistance. GM advises owners to check the tailgate before driving to make sure it is closed and latched.
