General Motors announced on April 15 that it will move its headquarters closer to downtown Detroit in 2025. For more than 20 years, its headquarters were at the Renaissance Center on Detroit’s Riverside.
GM will put its new global headquarters just a few blocks from the Renaissance Center. The new headquarters is in Hudson, which is the second-tallest skyscraper in Detroit.
“It is important to all of us that we continue to stay in Detroit for a long time.” said Mary Barra, GM’s chief executive. She also said the new headquarters will have collaborative areas for employees, space to host events, and space to display vehicles.

In a statement, GM said it has signed a 15-year initial lease for multiple floors, including the top office floor and street-facing display space. Financial terms between GM and Bedrock are not disclose yet. GM President Mark Reuss declined to say how the new building would differ in cost and size from the existing headquarters.
Since GM entered Detroit’s Renaissance Center in 1996, the company’s headquarters has become one of Detroit’s major landmarks. GM said the move was “A milestone that revitalize downtown Detroit.”
Barra said GM will work with Bedrock, along with the city of Detroit and Wayne County, on how to redevelop the GM Renaissance Center headquarters over the next year.
GM remains the only one stayed in Motor City from Detroit’s Big Three automakers. Ford’s headquarter locates in the nearby Dearborn, Mich., while Stellantis’ main office is in Auburn Hills, Mich., about 30 miles from Detroit.
