Japan’s TBS television reported on December 23 that Honda and Nissan aim to complete integration talks by June 2025, if successful, a joint holding company between the two parties will be listed, and Honda and Nissan will be privatized in August 2026.

Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Co. are struggling to survive in a rapidly changing auto industry. In March, Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. said they were considering cooperation on electrification and software development. The two sides agreed to conduct joint research and extended the partnership to Mitsubishi Motors in August this year.

On Dec. 21, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported that Honda Motor Co and Nissan Motor Co are considering producing cars at each other’s plants as part of plans to deepen cooperation and possibly integration. Among the forms of integration being discussed, Honda would consider supplying hybrid cars to Nissan and jointly using Nissan’s car assembly plant in the UK, as Honda currently has only engine and motorcycle plants in Europe. However, Nissan declined to comment and said the details of the report were not based on company announcements.

“Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors are pooling our strengths and exploring potential forms of cooperation, but we have not made any decisions at this time,” a Honda spokesman said.

French carmaker Renault, Nissan’s largest shareholder, is open in principle to the deal and will study all the implications of the deal, the sources said.

The deal would create the world’s third-largest auto group by vehicle sales, with annual sales of 7.4 million vehicles, behind Toyota Motor and Volkswagen AG.
