According to foreign media reports, Kia Americas will recall 101,409 vehicles due to problems with the roof molds loosening and falling off.
Models affected by the recall include some 2023 to 2024 Sportage and 2022 to 2024 Carnival vehicles, which may have defective roof mouldings..
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says falling roof molding could pose a hazard to other vehicles on the road and increase the likelihood of a crash. NHTSA said in a safety recall report that warning signs of the defect include “significant lifting of the roof plastic parts while driving or making noise while driving.”

In its report to NHTSA, Kia said, “During a routine review of field data, Kia’s North American Safety Office identified an increasing number of incidents of roof moulding loosening and detachment on the 2024 Kia and 2023 Cougar. Kia’s North American Safety Office escalated the issue for further evaluation and shared the initial data analysis with Kia headquarters to request additional information. Kia headquarters shared repeat test results with the Kia North American Safety Office and requested an inspection of the vehicles to determine the condition of the vehicles in question.”
Kia said it had received no reports of crashes or injuries related to the defect as of the time of the announcement. Dealers will inspect the roof mouldings and offer free replacement or fixing if necessary. Owner notification letters are expected to go out on 15 March. A Kia spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
