According to foreign media reports, California-based electric car manufacturer Lucid is developing an electric car under $50,000. The company’s CEO Peter Rawlinson said that Lucid’s goal is not just to launch Air and Gravity models.
Lucid has already launched the Air high-end electric sedan, which starts at a whopping $80,000 (before tax credits), and the highest-priced Air Sapphire, which has a $249,000 suggested retail price. The company’s upcoming Gravity SUV won’t be priced low either.
Rawlinson told British media,”The mid-sized electric sedan we have in development will be a competitor to the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. It’s the first time I’ve ever said something like this: we will be competing in the high-volume family car market.”

Rawlinson also added that Lucid’s next model will be priced in the $50,000 range, a price close to the Tesla Model Y. And for Tesla’s other model, the Model 3, it can be priced under $30,000 when federal and state tax credits are factored in.
When the Model 3 and Model Y first hit the market, Tesla ran into a few issues, quality being one of them, with many owners complaining of minor workmanship flaws in the vehicles, such as inconsistent finishes and large panel gaps.Lucid can learn from Tesla’s experience and adopt stricter quality control measures for its new models to make them stand out at launch.
Another advantage for Lucid is the range of its vehicles, after the Air Grand became the longest-range EPA-certified electric vehicle in the U.S., with a range of 500 miles (about 800 kilometers). Although the new model under development is smaller in size and therefore has a smaller battery capacity, Lucid could use its expertise in batteries (the company was formerly a battery company) to make range the biggest selling point of the new vehicle, as range is known to be one of the most important factors for electric car consumers.
