According to foreign media reports, purely electric car registrations in the Netherlands account for about 31 % of all new car registrations in 2023. Including hybrids, more than two-thirds of sold cars are equipped with electric drive systems, with the best-selling model being the Tesla Model Y.
According to the RAI Association, the dealer association BOVAG and the management consultancy RDC, purely electric vehicles accounted for 30.8 % of new car registrations in the Netherlands last year. The market share of hybrid vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and hybrids, was 37.1 %. Pure petrol cars had a market share of 30.4 %, almost the same as pure electric cars. However, only 1.1 % of registrations are for diesel vehicles.
In 2022, electric cars account for 23.5 % of new car sales in the Netherlands, compared to a 7.5 percentage point increase in pure electric car market share in 2023. According to the RAI Association and BOVAG, Dutch government subsidies and tax incentives have played an important role in the growth of pure electric vehicles. These incentives currently expire in 2025.
In 2023, total sales in the Dutch passenger car market increased by 19 % to 369,791 units. This included a relatively weak performance in December, with 26,577 new car registrations (down 14 % year-on-year). The statistics publisher said the market’s growth was “largely due to the catch-up effect of delayed deliveries in 2022”. And after catching up in the first few months of last year, the Dutch market had normalised by the end of last year.
In 2023, the brand with the largest number of new car registrations in the Netherlands is Volkswagen, but the best-selling model is the Tesla Model Y. A closer look at the statistics for 2023 shows that in the brand rankings, Volkswagen (34,958 registered vehicles, 9.5% market share) leads the way, followed by Kia (33,504 vehicles, 9.1%). Toyota (25,576 units, 6.9%), BMW (20,529 units, 5.6%) and Skoda (20,498 units, 5.5%) followed. Tesla did not make the top five.
