According to reports from foreign media, from now on, Tesla will require its employees to install and demonstrate the company’s driver assistance system inside vehicles sold in North America before delivering them to customers. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the “hard and fast” rule would slow deliveries of its cars.
An internal memo obtained by foreign media reveals that Musk has instructed employees to conduct brief test drives with customers prior to delivery, showcasing the “fully autonomous driving” (FSD) system. Additionally, all vehicles receiving maintenance must undergo thorough inspections by employees.
“I know it’s going to slow down the delivery process, but it’s still a requirement, and that’s very important,” Musk said. He further explained that many owners are unfamiliar with the capabilities of the Tesla system and highlighted how few individuals truly comprehend FSD’s effectiveness when used under driver supervision. Neither Tesla nor Musk have responded immediately to requests for comment.

The new rules show that Tesla is “tightening its grip” on technology, as FSD is both an important source of revenue and the company’s most controversial point of contention. Tesla has attracted attention for using the terms “Full Self-Driving” and “Autopilot” in its marketing. While these names suggest that the vehicle is capable of autonomous driving, the reality is that the driver still needs to keep an eye on the road and keep both hands on the wheel during use.
In addition, Tesla’s move will also help to justify the price of FSD to buyers, which Tesla currently sells for $12,000. “Your car can drive itself almost anywhere with minimal intervention from the driver, and the system will continue to improve,” the company promised.
