According to foreign media reports, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that Toyota will recall 280,663 pickup trucks and SUVs in the United States due to the possibility of unexpected movement of the vehicles when they are in neutral and the brakes are not applied, and that Toyota will issue a software update to address the issue. Most of the vehicles included in the recall are new vehicles sold in the United States, but a small number were sold in Puerto Rico.
Toyota’s recall includes some Tundra, Tundra Hybrid and Lexus LX600 built between 2022 and 2024, and Sequoia ) SUVs built in 2023.
NHTSA says documents released by Toyota show that “when the vehicle gears are shifted to neutral, certain components of the transmission may not immediately disengage. This may allow some engine power to continue to be transferred to the wheels, which may unintentionally move the vehicle forward at low speeds when the vehicle is on a flat surface and the brakes are not applied, resulting in an increased risk of a crash.”

NHTSA said dealers will upgrade the software in the transmission control electronic control units (ECUs) of the affected vehicles free of charge.NHTSA will likely continue to monitor the situation and investigate possible broader problems in Toyota’s manufacturing process.
Toyota said the recall is a proactive step the company is taking to maintain high safety standards and customer trust. Toyota’s prompt response to these issues demonstrates its commitment to safety and its reputation as a leading automaker. By correcting this issue in a timely and effective manner, the company aims to prevent any adverse events from occurring and ensure the reliability of its vehicles.
