According to Reuters, on December 20, Toyota said it would recall 1.12 million Toyota and Lexus brand vehicles globally because a short circuit in the sensor may cause the airbags to fail to deploy as designed.

According to reports, the recall covers models from the 2020 to 2022 model years, including the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlander and Sienna hybrids, as well as Lexus ES250, ES300H, ES350, and RX350 models.Of the 1.12 million vehicles recalled this time, 1 million are from the U.S. market.

Toyota says the recalled models have passenger seats equipped with an Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, which can have a manufacturing problem that can cause a short circuit, preventing the airbag system from correctly classifying a passenger’s weight, and the airbags may not deploy as designed in certain crash scenarios, increasing the risk of injury. Toyota plans to notify owners of the recall starting next February, when dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace said sensors.

In July 2022, Toyota had recalled 3,500 RAV4 vehicles in the U.S. due to potential interference between the vehicle’s internal components, which could cause the OCS sensor to incorrectly detect occupants.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that front airbags have saved more than 50,000 lives in the US over 30 years. The agency said it installed the new sensors because the old airbags opened the same way for all drivers and passengers, causing some injuries, and in rare cases, children, smaller adults and unbelted passengers even died from being too close to the airbags when they opened.
