Tesla has posted more than a dozen new jobs for its Autopilot self-driving system and artificial intelligence, the first sign of workforce growth at the company after weeks of layoffs.

As of May 23, Tesla’s job page listed 17 open positions in the San Francisco area’s “Autopilot and Robotics” division. The positions are mainly for engineering jobs in Tesla’s driver assistance division, and two are for artificial intelligence research positions.

Earlier, due to the decline in electric car sales, Tesla announced that it would cut 10% of its global workforce, which is expected to continue until June. The company’s job site was largely empty during the mass layoffs, and in recent weeks it listed job openings at only three manufacturing development projects in Texas, California and Nevada.

Along with the layoffs, Tesla has increased its focus on building self-driving taxis. Musk, the company’s chief executive, has said he now sees Tesla primarily as an artificial intelligence, robotics and sustainable energy company.

Prior to the layoffs, Musk claimed in a series of posts on X that rival Open AI had been “aggressively hiring” Tesla engineers. He said Tesla had to increase the pay of people on its AI engineering team, which he claimed has “over 200 great engineers.”

The new positions in Tesla’s Autopilot and robotics business list rough salary estimates – between $104,000 and $360,000 a year, plus cash, stock awards and various benefits.

Tesla has introduced a product called “Fully Autonomous Driving” (FSD), which actually requires users to keep their hands on the wheel and pay attention to the road at all times. Musk has long promised that cars will soon be fully autonomous, but he has also acknowledged that perfecting the technology has been more difficult than he initially anticipated.
